  Hi this is Kimberly from Michael's Hair Studio, Barbara and I met when she hired me straight out of hair school 13 years ago. We worked for an old school company that owned 350 salons through the United States and Canada. I was a manager in the Amsterdam store and Barbara was the area supervisor for three states. I was young and getting into the trends of the young group. I had got my tong pierced and the next day Barbara toured with the district supervisors, and they frowned upon my style.( To many piercings including the tong.) They wanted her to fire me if I didn't change my style. I told them they could take their job and shove it. Both Barb and I took the company car that same day and went looking for new jobs. We landed a job that very day in Albany working in Crossgates Mall. I worked there for 6 years between the barber shop and the hair salon. Barb didn't find it much to her liking so she moved on. We still remained friends and always said we were going to one day own our own. We didn't want to open a shop until we were able to service everyone that walked in our shop, that includes all nationalities. I had called her in November of "07' and told her I found a perfect location to open a shop. The next day I called and told her I rented it. We chose Michaels as the name because it worked in both of our worlds, my husband name, both my boys name, her boyfriends name, her brothers name. And also we wanted a name that would attract both men and women. We did not come in the store with any business loans. We gathered all that we both acquired over the years, and stuff that our family and friends donated. We wanted a shop that when someone walked in, they were not afraid to talk to us or touch something. We wanted them to feel at home. We also took in consideration that alot of salons do not like a women coming to get there hair done and bringing their kids to hang out. We have a shop that kids are with us all day. We have had customers donate Disney movies and toys games etc... All to keep the children occupied while their parent got their hair done. We opened Michael's a few weeks before Christmas "07" and we wanted to make an impact when we did. So for 3 full days we had our kids and friends stand out front with signs offering free haircuts. We had over 100 people walk through our door. We had big tractor trailers pulled along the street coming in for cuts. We had fun. And people still talk about our opening. We do different th
